The Illuminati was a secret society in Bavaria. It was founded by Adam Weishaupt on May 1, 1776. Illuminati meaning "enlightened". The group was made up of freethinkers (Barruel and Robison). When Karl Theodor became ruler of Bavaria and banned all secret societies in 1884 (Shermer). Because of the many conspracy theories, some beleive the Illuminati still exists today.
